Certification with the Canadian Association for Child and Play Therapy

Certification as a Play Therapist in Canada involves a minimum of a Masters Degree in an appropriate mental health discipline from an accredited institution or full membership in a regulatory professional body that governs psychotherapists.

When applying for certification with CAPT -applicants have to provide proof of Play Therapy specific foundation training from an approved provider:

Membership in the Canadian Association for Play Therapy is also a course requirement.

Theresa Fraser (Director with MPTC) is an approved provider and the only approved provider in the Canadian Maritimes.

Please note: MTPTC is not a private career college rather it is a centre that will provide play therapy as well as workshops to already credentialed Masters level clinicians. We will also provide workshops to service providers who want to include play based interventions in their current work without intention of becoming certified. Please note: Participants cannot access employment opportunities by only engaging in Play Therapy workshops. Instead they need to compete requirements to meet regulatory requirements in their province/territory and/or additional certification requirements as established by the Canadian Association for Play Therapy. MPTC is NOT a CAREER COLLEGE.

Supervision Hours

While completing Play Therapy clinical practice hours, certifying Play Therapists engage in supervision from Certified Play Therapy Supervisors. These hours can be completed face to face or via distance. See the CPT list of approved Supervisors

Play Therapy Clinical Practice Hours

The Canadian Association requires that applicants complete a specific number of Play Therapy provision hours with a number being delivered post- masters degree completion. In Nova Scotia there are many clinicians already providing service to children/adolescents and families using play based approaches.  These hours can be counted towards required hours. Talk to your Certified Play Therapy Supervisor to learn how to document these for certification.
Theresa is a recognized supervisor in Canada with CPT, NSCCT, Ontario College of Psychotherapy and APPT in Australia.

Other Certification Requirements

CPT applicants should check the Canadian Association web site for additional certification requirements including a Vulnerable Sector Police record check.

Do you have what it takes

to become a certified Play Therapist?

Play Therapy is an adjunct profession for professionals that already have a primary designation and are members of a regulatory body. Some professional such as Child and Youth Care Practitioners engage in Play Therapy training so they can utilize play therapy tools in their profession. They too are welcome to utilize our training and use it towards CYC-P certification. Play Therapist Certification isn't easy. It requires Play Therapy specific education, proof of clinical hours and supervision hours. It is up to applicants to ensure that they will meet certification standards for CAPT if they intend to seek certification. MPTI will ensure that the educational workshops meet approved provider requirements for certification. MPTC will also seek CEU approval status from the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

If you are interested in becoming part of the first cohort of MPTC please contact us. The first workshop is scheduled for September 2019.
